# Chat Sessions

> How Dume's dashboard handles multiple conversations, tracks progress on multi-step tasks, and asks before it does anything sensitive.

The Dashboard is where you talk to Dume. Every conversation is a session, and you can keep several open as tabs at once.

## Tabs run in the background

Open a new tab from the **+** next to your current tabs, or click into a saved session from History. There's no cap on how many you can have open at once. A tab you're not looking at keeps working: start a research task in one tab, switch to another, and come back once it's done instead of waiting on it.

## Watching a task run

For anything with more than one step, a **Progress** panel on the right lists what Dume is doing and checks items off as it finishes them. A **Context** panel below it shows which model is handling the session and how much of its context window is in use.

## Sending a message

Every session shares the same message box: text, attachments, connected tools, and voice input. See [Chat with Dume](/getting-started/chat-interface) for how to write an effective prompt and what each control does.

## Permission and clarifying prompts

A session stops and asks before anything hard to undo, and asks for missing details instead of guessing. See [When Dume asks you something back](/getting-started/chat-interface#when-dume-asks-you-something-back) for what that looks like in practice.
